African farmers are often criticised for growing crops the way their ancestors did. Critics say they must embrace (a very specific version of) modernity. That includes focusing on cash crops, buying hybrid seeds, and using commercial fertiliser.

The islands of São Tomé and Príncipe were one of the earliest places where Europeans assembled the defining elements of the tropical plantation complex: enslaved African labour, monoculture of a single cash crop, industrial processing, racial hierarchy and export of those agricultural commodities abroad.
