Oksana Bychkova’s debut film, Piter FM, came out in 2006 and became a huge hit. Since then, the director has made several more features — “Plyus odin” (Plus One), “Eshche odin god” (Another Year), and “Nina. ” In 2022, she left Russia for Barcelona. She’s now working on a new project, a short film called “Elio,” about a queer flamenco dancer.
On August 29, at a meeting with teachers, Russian President Vladimir Putin came up with a new metaphor that he believes explains why Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Killer whales, he said, “eat bears like minnows,” attacking them in packs.
On August 17, Sergey Vakulenko, a senior fellow at the Berlin-based Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, said on The Breakfast Show that despite Ukrainian strikes on oil refineries, Russia’s refining output remains fairly high. By his estimate, refining has fallen by only 25–28%.
